Dos and Don'ts for E-Rickshaw Battery Charging

Electric rickshaws, also known as also known as (electric tuk-tuks, e-rickshaws, totos and e-tricycles), have won the hearts of people worldwide as a viable mode of transportation due to several factors, including their user-friendliness, effectiveness, and eco-conscious design.

The battery that powers an e-rickshaw is a critical component, and understanding how to charge and maintain it becomes even more crucial for preserving its durability and ensuring optimal performance. Even though several electric rickshaw manufacturers in India provide a demonstration on charging the EV, there are certain simple dos and don’ts that we all miss.

To help you ensure that you are charging the battery of your e-rickshaw in the best possible way, we have enlisted a few do’s and don’ts of charging e-rickshaw batteries to maximise their lifespan and efficiency.

Charging Dos:

Charge the battery after every use

To ensure that your e-rickshaw battery operates at its maximum capacity, it is essential to recharge it after each use. Even if the battery is not completely drained, battery rickshaw charging prevents a reduction in its overall capacity over time.

Use the right charger

Each battery requires a specific charger. Therefore, it is crucial to use the charger provided by the manufacturer for your e-rickshaw battery. Using the wrong charger can lead to battery damage and a shortened lifespan.

Charge the battery in a well-ventilated area

When charging batteries, gases and heat are produced, which need to be properly released. Charging your e-rickshaw battery in a well-ventilated environment reduces the risk of overheating and minimises the chances of a fire hazard.

Charge the battery when it’s cool

An e-rickshaw charging point is everywhere. So, you don’t have to be in a hurry to charge it all over again. Charging a hot battery can cause damage and reduce its lifespan. It is advisable to allow the battery to cool down before initiating the charging process to maintain its longevity and performance.

Charging Don’ts:

Don’t overcharge the battery

Overcharging an e-rickshaw battery can impact the lifespan of the battery in a negative way. This is why sticking to the recommended e-rickshaw battery charging time and not leaving the battery connected to the charger for longer than necessary is suggested by most of the electric rickshaw manufacturers in India.

Don’t let the battery discharge entirely

Allowing the battery to discharge completely can result in damage and decrease its overall lifespan. Recharge the battery before it reaches a critically low level to preserve its durability and ensure uninterrupted performance.

Don’t store the battery in a hot or humid environment

Storing an e-rickshaw battery in a hot or humid environment can lead to deterioration and reduced lifespan. It is crucial to store the battery in a cool, dry place to minimise the risk of damage and maintain its optimal condition.
